Married couples filing jointly who want to save on taxes: start with the first service below. IRS Publication 501 says married couples "will generally pay more combined tax on separate returns than you would on a joint return," and the new tips, overtime and senior deductions require married couples to file jointly. Every couple's numbers are different, so we work from your actual documents and make no promises about the result.

Married couples filing jointly

Married couples are the first group we talk to, because the filing-status choice affects everything else on the return. IRS Publication 501 says most couples pay less combined tax on a joint return and recommends figuring the tax both ways unless you are required to file separately (IRS Publication 501). The 2026 standard deduction is $32,200 for a joint return, compared with $16,100 for each spouse filing separately (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32).

On separate returns, Publication 501 says you generally can't take the education credits, the student loan interest deduction or, in most cases, the credit for child and dependent care expenses. Your capital loss limit drops from $3,000 to $1,500, and if your spouse itemizes, you can't claim the standard deduction. The no tax on tips deduction, the overtime deduction and the senior deduction for 2025 through 2028 all require married taxpayers to file jointly (IRS, Tax deductions for working Americans and seniors).

Rule (2026 returns)Married filing jointlyMarried filing separately

Capital loss limit$3,000$1,500 each
Rental loss special allowanceUp to $25,000 for active participantsUp to $12,500 each only if you lived apart all year
Who owes the taxBoth spouses, jointly and individuallyEach spouse for their own return

A joint return has a trade-off: both spouses are responsible, jointly and individually, for the tax, interest and penalties on it (IRS Publication 501). Nevada is a community property state for federal tax purposes, so separate returns here usually need Form 8958 to split community income (IRS Publication 555). If one spouse is self-employed, owns rentals or has a business, the joint return carries those forms too. We figure it both ways when it matters and show you the numbers; we don't promise a result. Read more in individual tax preparation in Las Vegas and what drives the cost of a tax return.

Individual tax preparation

Most Las Vegas individual returns are federal only, because Nevada has no personal income tax. A W-2-only return with the standard deduction is the simplest; the work grows with each schedule you need, such as Schedule A for itemized deductions, Schedule 8812 for the child tax credit, Schedule 1-A for the tips, overtime and senior deductions, Form 8949 for stock or crypto sales, or a return for another state if you moved here during the year.

Casino and hospitality workers often ask about the tips deduction and tokes, and the IRS list of tipped occupations includes gambling dealers and cage workers. Retirees ask about the senior deduction and required distributions. People who won at the casino ask about Form W-2G. We cover each in its own guide: casino worker taxes, gambling winnings tax, tax planning and our personal tax service page. If you live in Henderson, Summerlin or Spring Valley, see the Henderson, Summerlin and Spring Valley guides.

If you have foreign bank accounts or you are a nonresident, see FBAR and Form 1040-NR; those filings are quoted separately.

Business and entity returns (Forms 1065, 1120-S and 1120)

We prepare federal business returns for partnerships and multi-member LLCs (Form 1065), S-corporations (Form 1120-S) and C-corporations (Form 1120). For calendar-year businesses, Forms 1065 and 1120-S are due March 15 and Form 1120 is due April 15. Filing Form 7004 by the original due date gives an automatic 6-month extension of time to file, but "Form 7004 does not extend the time to pay any tax due" (IRS, Instructions for Form 7004). A late partnership or S-corp return can cost $255 per owner per month, for up to 12 months (IRS, Instructions for Form 1065; Instructions for Form 1120-S).

Nevada has no state income tax on business profits. The state taxes that come up most are the Modified Business Tax (1.17% on wages over $50,000 a quarter for most employers, per the Nevada Department of Taxation) and the Commerce Tax, which applies only to businesses with more than $4,000,000 of Nevada gross revenue in a year (NRS 363C). An S-corp owner who works in the business must take reasonable wages on a W-2 before taking distributions. Read business tax return preparation in Las Vegas, S-corp tax preparation, our business tax service page and our incorporation service page.

LLC formation

A Nevada LLC starts with three state filings: Articles of Organization ($75, NRS 86.561), the initial list of managers or members ($150, NRS 86.263) and a state business license ($200, NRS 76.100), for $425 in state fees (Nevada Revised Statutes). Every Nevada LLC also needs a registered agent with a Nevada address. The IRS issues an Employer Identification Number at no charge (IRS, Get an EIN).

For federal tax, a single-member LLC is disregarded by default and reports on Schedule C or Schedule E, and an LLC with two or more members files Form 1065 as a partnership. An LLC can elect to be taxed as a corporation with Form 8832, or as an S-corp with Form 2553, which is generally due within 2 months and 15 days after the start of the tax year the election takes effect (IRS, LLC; IRS, About Form 2553). An LLC is mainly a legal and liability decision, so talk to an attorney about protection. See LLC formation in Las Vegas.

Real estate investor tax (Schedule E and Form 8825)

Rentals you own personally, or through a single-member LLC, go on Schedule E of your Form 1040, with depreciation on Form 4562. Residential rental buildings are depreciated over 27.5 years and nonresidential buildings over 39 years (IRS Publication 527; IRS Publication 946). When a partnership or S-corp owns the property, the entity reports it on Form 8825; the IRS says partnerships and S corporations "use Form 8825 to report income and deductible expenses from rental real estate activities" (IRS, About Form 8825).

If you actively participate in a rental, you may deduct up to $25,000 of rental losses against other income, with a phase-out at higher incomes; married couples filing separately who lived together at any time during the year get no allowance, and those who lived apart all year get up to $12,500 each (IRS Publication 925; IRS Publication 501). Short-term rentals such as Airbnb follow different rules when the average stay is 7 days or less. See real estate investor taxes, Airbnb and short-term rental taxes and realtor tax preparation for agents.

Cost segregation and accelerated depreciation, including Form 3115 catch-up

A cost segregation study, prepared by an engineering or valuation firm, splits a building's cost into shorter-lived parts such as 5-, 7- and 15-year property, which can be depreciated faster than the 27.5- or 39-year building. For qualified property acquired after January 19, 2025, bonus depreciation is 100% (IRS, IR-2026-06). For 2026, the Section 179 limit is $2,560,000 (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32).

If you bought a property in an earlier year and never claimed the depreciation, or claimed it the wrong way, Form 3115 (Application for Change in Accounting Method) can often catch up the missed amount on your current return without amending old returns (IRS, About Form 3115). This matters because the IRS treats depreciation as taken when you sell, whether you claimed it or not. Passive loss limits can still cap how much of a large first-year deduction you use right away (IRS Publication 925). We put the study's numbers on your return and track depreciation recapture for the year you sell. See cost segregation in Las Vegas.

Trucking, including Form 2290

Owner-operators usually file Schedule C and Schedule SE, with Form 4562 for depreciation on trucks and trailers. Heavy highway vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more also file Form 2290, the heavy highway vehicle use tax. The tax period runs July 1 through June 30, and the IRS says Form 2290 "must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of first use," so a truck in use in July is reported by August 31. A vehicle expected to be used 5,000 miles or less during the period (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) can be reported as suspended (IRS, Instructions for Form 2290).

The IRS returns a stamped Schedule 1 as proof of payment, so keep it with your truck papers. Bring settlement statements, fuel, repair, insurance and truck loan records, and any per diem log. If your trucking business is an LLC or S-corp, the entity return carries these forms instead. Many owner-operators are married and file jointly, so the trucking schedules ride on the couple's joint return. See self-employed tax preparation and business tax returns.

Rideshare and gig drivers

Uber, Lyft and delivery drivers are self-employed for tax purposes. Income goes on Schedule C and self-employment tax on Schedule SE. Platforms send Form 1099-K when payments are over $20,000 and there are more than 200 transactions, and Form 1099-NEC for other payments, at $600 for payments before 2026 and $2,000 for 2026; you report all of your income whether you get a form or not (IRS, Understanding your Form 1099-K).

The IRS standard mileage rate was 70 cents a mile for 2025; for 2026 it is 72.5 cents from January 1 through June 30 and 76 cents from July 1 through December 31 (IRS, Standard mileage rates). A written mileage log kept during the year is the record the IRS expects. See rideshare and gig driver taxes in Las Vegas.

Self-employed returns

Freelancers, contractors, real estate agents and other self-employed people file Schedule C and pay self-employment tax of 15.3% (12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare) once net earnings reach $400. For 2026, the Social Security part applies to the first $184,500 of combined wages and self-employment earnings (IRS, Self-employment tax; IRS Publication 15).

Self-employed people usually make quarterly estimated payments. The IRS due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 of the following year (IRS, Estimated taxes). In 2024 the Department of Labor issued an independent contractor rule; that rule has been challenged in court and is not being enforced, so whether a worker is an employee is still decided case by case. See self-employed tax preparation and contractor tax preparation.

IRS notices and amended returns

The IRS says to read a notice carefully and keep it, and if it asks you to respond, act by the due date. If you disagree, follow the instructions in the notice and include copies of your documents; replying on time protects your appeal rights. If you owe, the IRS says to pay what you can by the due date to reduce interest and penalties (IRS, Understanding your IRS notice or letter). A CP2000 proposes changes based on income the IRS matched; it is not a bill, and you can agree or disagree in writing.

If a filed return was wrong, Form 1040-X corrects it. To claim a refund, file within 3 years after you filed the original or 2 years after you paid the tax, whichever is later. The IRS says to allow 8 to 12 weeks for an amended return to be processed, and up to 16 weeks in some cases (IRS, File an amended return). See IRS notice help in Las Vegas, amended tax returns and our IRS resolution service page.

Extensions

Individuals file Form 4868 to get until October 15 to file (IRS, Get an extension). Partnerships, S-corps and C-corps file Form 7004, which gives 6 months, to September 15 for a calendar-year 1065 or 1120-S and October 15 for a calendar-year 1120 (IRS, Instructions for Form 7004). In both cases an extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay, so we help you estimate what to pay by the original deadline. See our tax extension service page.

No. Form 4868 and Form 7004 give more time to file, not more time to pay, so estimate and pay what you owe by the original deadline to limit interest and penalties.
