Key facts for Las Vegas and Clark County, Nevada filers, 2026 (updated October 28, 2026)
Casinos issue Form W-2G for certain wins. Under current law, the reporting threshold for slot machines, bingo, and keno rises from $1,200 to $2,000 starting in 2026, adjusted for inflation after that. Other thresholds apply to poker tournaments, table games at long odds, and lotteries. Some large wins have 24% federal withholding.
Important: all gambling winnings are taxable, with or without a W-2G. That includes table game wins, sports betting, online apps, raffles, and fantasy contests.
Before 2026, if you itemized, you could deduct gambling losses up to the amount of your winnings. Starting with tax year 2026, the deduction is limited to 90% of your losses, and still no more than your winnings. Example:
You must itemize to deduct losses at all. If your other itemized deductions are small, taking the standard deduction may still be better, even though your losses get no benefit. We run both ways.
The IRS expects a diary or similar record of wins and losses: date, place, game, amounts won and lost. Helpful records include:- Players club win/loss statements from each casino- Sportsbook and app account histories- Bank and ATM withdrawals at casinos- W-2G forms and any withholding
Win/loss statements are a good start but are not perfect proof on their own. A simple log made at the time is strong support.
Nonresident aliens who win in Las Vegas often have 30% withheld. Some tax treaties allow a refund of part or all of that using Form 1040-NR. Our fees depend on the forms your return needs. Call 702-871-7884 for a quote.
Nevada has no state income tax, but your home state may tax your Las Vegas winnings. Our fees depend on the forms your return needs. Call 702-871-7884 for a quote.
A large jackpot with no withholding can create a balance due and an underpayment penalty. If you win big early in the year, consider an estimated payment.
If gambling is your trade, you report on Schedule C. Professionals face the same 90% limit for losses and expenses starting in 2026. This area is reviewed closely, so records matter.

Gambling winnings are added to your income before losses are subtracted, so even a break-even year raises your adjusted gross income. That can reduce credits that phase out with income, make more of your Social Security benefits taxable, and raise Medicare premiums two years later for retirees. It can also reduce eligibility for the new tips, overtime and senior deductions. We look at the whole picture, not just the W-2G.
Nevada sportsbook accounts and online betting apps keep a full history of wagers and payouts. Download your annual statement early in the year. Net results per session matter for record-keeping, and a clear statement makes your log much easier to support.
Examples only.
