Married couples filing jointly who want to save on taxes: start with the filing-status section below. IRS Publication 501 says most married couples pay less combined tax on a joint return, and the new tips, overtime and senior deductions require married couples to file jointly. Every couple's numbers are different, so we look at your actual documents and make no promises about the result.

Key facts (checked October 29, 2026)

What drives the cost of a tax return

There is no honest one-size price for tax preparation, because no two returns need the same forms. The fee for your return comes from the work it needs. These are the main cost drivers:

What you haveForms usually involvedWhy it adds work
W-2 wages only, standard deductionForm 1040The base return
Children or other dependentsSchedule 8812 and related credit formsEligibility tests for each child and credit
Itemized deductions (mortgage interest, property tax, charity, medical)Schedule AEach deduction is checked against records and limits
Self-employment, rideshare, gig or 1099-NEC incomeSchedule C and Schedule SEIncome, expenses, mileage and self-employment tax
Tips, overtime or age 65 and older (2025 through 2028)Schedule 1-ANew deductions with income phase-outs and record rules
Rental property or AirbnbSchedule E and Form 4562Rental income, expenses and depreciation
Stocks, crypto or a home saleForm 8949 and Schedule DCost basis and gain or loss for each sale
Income from another state, or a move during the yearA return for each other stateNevada has no income tax, but other states may
A business entity (S-corp, partnership, C-corp)Form 1120-S, 1065 or 1120, plus K-1sA separate business return
Amended returns, extensions, nonresident returns, FBARsForm 1040-X, 4868, 1040-NR, FinCEN 114Each is its own filing

Two other things affect the work: how organized your records are, and whether there are open IRS issues such as a notice or unfiled prior years. Organized documents keep the work, and your fee, down.

Married couples filing jointly: why the forms matter

For many married couples, a joint return is where the tax savings are. IRS Publication 501 says you "will generally pay more combined tax on separate returns than you would on a joint return," and it recommends figuring your tax both ways unless you are required to file separately (IRS Publication 501).

When married filing separately, IRS Publication 501 says:

The newer deductions add another reason. The no tax on tips deduction, the overtime deduction and the senior deduction for 2025 through 2028 all require married taxpayers to file jointly to claim them (IRS).

A joint return also has a trade-off: both spouses can be held responsible, jointly and individually, for the tax, interest and penalties on it (IRS Publication 501). If one spouse has self-employment income, rentals or a business, the joint return carries those forms too, which is why a joint return for a couple with a W-2 job and a side business needs more work than a W-2-only return. Ask any preparer, including us, to figure it both ways.

Joint vs separate, side by side. This comparison uses IRS rules for 2026 returns. It is general information, not a prediction for your household:

RuleMarried filing jointlyMarried filing separately
Combined taxGenerally lower, according to IRS Publication 501Generally higher combined tax
Standard deduction for 2026$32,200 for the couple$16,100 each, but not available if your spouse itemizes

Who is responsible for the taxBoth spouses, jointly and individuallyEach spouse for their own return
Nevada community propertyNot a separate stepEach spouse generally reports half of community income and deductions and attaches Form 8958
Changing your mindYou can't switch to separate returns after the due dateYou can switch to a joint return with Form 1040-X within 3 years of the due date, not counting extensions

When separate returns can still make sense. Publication 501 says married filing separately "may benefit you if you want to be responsible only for your own tax or if it results in less tax than filing a joint return." Two IRS tools matter for couples who are worried about a spouse's tax history. If a joint refund is taken to pay your spouse's past-due debt, the injured spouse can file Form 8379 to get back their share of the joint refund (IRS, About Form 8379). If a joint return was understated because of your spouse's errors and you didn't know about them, Form 8857 requests innocent spouse relief, separation of liability or equitable relief (IRS, Innocent spouse relief). Nevada is a community property state for federal tax purposes, so separate returns here take extra work to split community income (IRS Publication 555). That extra work is one reason the forms, not a flat price, decide the fee.

New federal deductions Las Vegas workers ask about

Nevada has no state income tax, so for most residents the federal Form 1040 is the whole job, and these newer federal rules matter more:

Source: IRS, Tax deductions for working Americans and seniors. The Child Tax Credit is worth up to $2,200 per qualifying child (IRS, Child Tax Credit).

Each of these has record and income rules. We check each one against your documents instead of leaving it to software defaults. Casino and hospitality workers can read more in casino worker tax preparation in Las Vegas.

How to compare tax preparers in Las Vegas

Price is only one part of the decision. Here is what the IRS says to check, plus questions worth asking any preparer, including us:

  1. A valid PTIN and a signed return. Paid preparers must sign the return and include their PTIN. The IRS calls a preparer who won't sign a "ghost preparer" and says to avoid them (IRS).
  2. Credentials and representation rights. Enrolled agents, CPAs and attorneys have unlimited representation rights before the IRS. Annual Filing Season Program participants have limited rights for returns they prepared and signed, and PTIN holders without either can prepare returns but generally can't represent clients (IRS, Understanding preparer credentials). You can search the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications.
  3. How the fee is set. Ask for the fee before work starts. Walk away from a fee tied to a percentage of your refund (IRS; 31 CFR 10.27).
  4. Your refund goes to your account. The IRS warns against preparers who want your refund deposited into their bank account.
  5. No promised refund. No honest preparer can guarantee a refund amount before seeing your documents. Good preparers ask to see your records and ask questions about your income and deductions.
  6. Year-round availability. IRS letters, estimated taxes and amended returns come up after April 15. Ask whether the office is open after tax season. iQTAXX is open year-round, not seasonal.
  7. Know where to report a problem. The IRS takes complaints about preparer misconduct on Form 14157, Return Preparer Complaint. If a preparer altered your return, misdirected your refund or filed without your consent, Form 14157-A asks the IRS to correct your account. The IRS sends Letter 4733 or Letter 6623 when it believes a return was prepared by a ghost preparer (IRS, Make a complaint about a tax return preparer).
  8. Fit for your situation. Ask whether the preparer regularly handles your kind of return, for example self-employed and 1099 income, rideshare and gig driving, real estate agents or business returns.

The industries we see most

Trucking, rideshare and real estate are among the main industries we serve. Each one adds forms beyond a basic return, which is why a quote starts with a few questions about your work:

Tax questions don't stop on April 15, and neither do we. iQTAXX is open year-round, not seasonal. These are the after-season jobs we see most, with the IRS rules that apply:

An extension, an amended return or an IRS letter each adds its own form or response, so each is quoted separately. Call 702-871-7884.

Free options, and when they fit

If your return is simple and your income is modest, free help may fit you better than any paid preparer, including us:

A paid preparer makes more sense when your return has self-employment, rentals, a business, another state, an IRS notice or prior-year problems. If you already have an IRS letter, see IRS notice help in Las Vegas, and if a past return was wrong, see amended tax returns.

Frequently asked questions

How much does tax preparation cost at iQTAXX?

Our fees depend on the forms your return needs. Call 702-871-7884 for a quote, and we tell you the fee before any work starts.

Why doesn't iQTAXX list prices online?

Because the right fee depends on your return. A short phone call lets us ask which forms you need and give you a real quote instead of a starting price that changes later.

What makes a tax return cost more?

More forms. Self-employment (Schedule C and SE), rentals (Schedule E), itemized deductions (Schedule A), stock or crypto sales (Form 8949), another state's return and business entity returns each add work.

Should married couples file jointly or separately?

Most married couples pay less combined tax on a joint return, and IRS Publication 501 recommends figuring the tax both ways. The tips, overtime and senior deductions for 2025 through 2028 require married taxpayers to file jointly to claim them.

Is it a red flag if a preparer charges a percentage of my refund?

Yes. The IRS warns that shady preparers base their fees on a percentage of the refund, and Circular 230 generally bars practitioners from charging contingent fees.

Do Nevada residents have to file a state income tax return?

No. Nevada has no state income tax. You may still need a return for another state if you lived or earned income there, such as a part-year California return after a move.

How much does tax preparation cost in Las Vegas?

It depends on the forms your return needs. A W-2-only return is less work than one with Schedule C, Schedule E, a second state or a business return. At iQTAXX, call 702-871-7884 for a quote before any work starts.

Can I get my taxes done for free in Las Vegas?

Possibly. IRS VITA sites generally serve people who make about $70,244 or less, and TCE focuses on people 60 and older. Use the IRS VITA/TCE Locator Tool or call 800-906-9887. IRS Free File guided software was for AGI of $95,000 or less and reopens in January 2027.

What documents do I need to bring to my tax appointment?

Photo ID, Social Security cards or ITIN letters, every W-2 and 1099, Form 1098 and 1095-A if you have them, last year's return, your IP PIN if the IRS issued one, and income, expense and mileage records for self-employment or rentals.

How do I check if a tax preparer is legitimate?

Make sure they have a PTIN and will sign the return. Search the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications, and avoid anyone who bases the fee on your refund. Report misconduct on IRS Form 14157.

Can a married couple switch from separate returns to a joint return?

Yes. IRS Publication 501 says you can generally change to a joint return with Form 1040-X within 3 years from the due date of the separate returns, not counting extensions. Once you file jointly, you can't switch to separate returns after the due date.

How long does an amended tax return take?

The IRS says to allow 8 to 12 weeks for Form 1040-X to be processed, and in some cases up to 16 weeks. To claim a refund, file within 3 years after the original return or 2 years after paying the tax, whichever is later.

How do I book an appointment with iQTAXX?

Call 702-871-7884. Booking is by phone call only, and we don't book by text.

Is iQTAXX open after April 15?
