Quick answerIf you got an IRS letter, don't ignore it and don't panic. Find the notice number in the top or bottom right corner (for example CP2000, CP14, or CP504) and the response date. A CP2000 is not a bill. It is a proposal saying the income the IRS received from employers, banks, or apps doesn't match your return, and you can agree, partly agree, or disagree by the date listed. iQTAXX helps Las Vegas taxpayers read the notice, gather the paperwork, prepare the response, and file any missing or amended returns. We are tax preparers, not CPAs or enrolled agents, so we explain below exactly what we can and can't do with the IRS for you. Call 702.871.7884.

We can:
We can't:
When your case needs one of those, we tell you right away and help you find a CPA, enrolled agent, or tax attorney who can sign Form 2848 and represent you. For returns we prepared, you sign IRS Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization) so we can speak with the IRS about your account. Form 8821 is not a power of attorney (Form 2848). We can still prepare the returns and paperwork they need.

Example (figures for illustration): A rideshare driver gets a CP2000 for a $14,000 1099-K that wasn't on the return. The IRS proposes tax on all $14,000. The driver had 9,000 business miles. At the 2025 IRS standard mileage rate of 70 cents per mile, that is $6,300 of expenses, so the right extra income is about $7,700. A response with a Schedule C and a mileage log asks the IRS to tax $7,700, not $14,000.
When both penalties apply in the same month, the failure-to-file penalty is reduced by the failure-to-pay amount.
Sources: IRS "Failure to file penalty" (updated Oct 5, 2026) and IRS "Failure to pay penalty". If you filed on time and have an approved payment plan, the failure-to-pay rate drops to 0.25% a month.
Example (figures for illustration): You owed $3,000 on a 2022 return that was due April 18, 2023, and you file and pay in October 2026, about 42 months late. Failure to file reaches its cap of 22.5% when failure to pay also applies, about $675. Failure to pay is about 0.5% × 42 months = 21%, about $630. That is roughly $1,305 in penalties, plus interest. Filing sooner stops the failure-to-file penalty from growing. You may qualify for first-time penalty relief if your record was clean for the 3 prior years.

A divorce decree the IRS misread. The IRS misapplied a client's divorce decree and tried to tax income that was not taxable. We sent the IRS the decree and the client's bank records, and the matter was resolved.
Years of back taxes. A new client came to us with several years of unfiled returns. We pulled the IRS transcripts, filed every past-due return, brought the client back into compliance and recovered thousands of dollars in refunds the client had missed.

Is a CP2000 notice a bill? No. A CP2000 is a proposal. The IRS is saying income it received from third parties doesn't match your return, and it is proposing a change. You can agree, partly agree, or disagree with documents by the date on the notice. If you don't reply, the IRS may send a bill.
How long do I have to respond to a CP2000?Reply by the date printed on the notice, which is usually about 30 days from the notice date. If you need more time, you can send an extension request with your reply. Missing the date can lead to a bill for the full proposed amount.
Can a tax preparer talk to the IRS for me?It depends on the preparer's credential. Preparers with an IRS Annual Filing Season Program Record of Completion can represent you only for returns they prepared and signed, and only before IRS customer service staff, examiners, and the Taxpayer Advocate Service. CPAs, enrolled agents, and attorneys can represent you on any matter, including collections and appeals.
How many years of unfiled tax returns do I need to file? The IRS generally asks for the last 6 years to be filed to be in good standing. If any of those years would give you a refund, file soon, because you only have 3 years from the original due date to claim it.
What happens if I never file a tax return? The IRS can file a substitute return for you, which usually leaves out your deductions and credits, and then send a bill. Penalties and interest keep growing, and the IRS can eventually levy wages or bank accounts. Filing your own return usually lowers what you owe.
Can I set up an IRS payment plan myself?Yes. If you owe $50,000 or less in combined tax, penalties, and interest, you can usually apply for a long-term payment plan online at IRS.gov. If you owe less than $100,000, you can ask for up to 180 days to pay in full.
Can iQTAXX get rid of my IRS debt?No one can honestly promise that. We can make sure your returns are correct, which often lowers what you owe, and help you set up a payment plan or ask for first-time penalty relief. Settling a debt for less, an offer in compromise, needs a CPA, enrolled agent, or tax attorney.
Do I need an enrolled agent in Las Vegas for IRS problems? It depends on the problem. Enrolled agents, CPAs and tax attorneys can represent you in any IRS matter, including collections and appeals. A preparer with an IRS Annual Filing Season Program record, like our team, can represent you only for returns we prepared and signed, and only before IRS examiners and customer service. iQTAXX can explain any notice and help answer a CP2000 for a return we prepared; for collection cases or appeals we'll tell you and help you find an enrolled agent, CPA or attorney.
Bring the letter, every page, and the return for that year. We'll tell you what it means, what we can do, and when you need a CPA, enrolled agent, or attorney instead.
