Quick answer Self-employed tax preparation in Las Vegas usually means a federal Form 1040 with Schedule C for your business, plus 15.3% self-employment tax on net earnings of $400 or more, because no one withholds tax from 1099 or card income. Nevada has no state income tax, so most Las Vegas freelancers, contractors and gig workers file only a federal income tax return, and the work that matters most is tracking deductions, paying quarterly estimates and, for married couples filing jointly, planning both spouses' income together. Our fees depend on the forms your return needs. Call 702-871-7884 for a quote.

Key facts (checked October 29, 2026)

How self-employed people are taxed in Las Vegas

When you are paid on a 1099-NEC, through a payment app or by card, no one withholds tax for you. Your return usually has three layers:

  1. Schedule C. Your gross business income minus ordinary and necessary business expenses equals your net profit (IRS, Self-employed individuals tax center).
  2. Self-employment tax (Schedule SE). 15.3% on most net earnings, covering Social Security and Medicare. Half of it is deductible when figuring your income tax.
  3. Federal income tax. Your profit, after the half-SE-tax deduction and any QBI deduction, is added to your other income, including a spouse's wages if you file jointly.
  4. Nevada. No state income tax return for individuals.

Every legitimate expense lowers net profit, which lowers both self-employment tax and income tax. That is why records matter more for self-employed people than for W-2 employees.

Self-employed tax deductions we look for

Married couples filing jointly with self-employment income

Many self-employed people in Las Vegas are married, and couples often want to know how to save on taxes together. Common points we review with married couples filing jointly:

Results depend on your numbers, and we explain the options before you decide. See tax planning in Las Vegas.

Quarterly estimated taxes

Self-employed people usually pay estimated tax four times a year with Form 1040-ES (IRS, About Form 1040-ES). Missing payments can mean an underpayment penalty. When we finish your return, we can work out next year's estimates so April is not a surprise.

When an S-corp might make sense

Once profit is steady, electing S-corp status can change how self-employment tax applies, because the owner takes a reasonable salary through payroll and the rest as distributions (IRS, S corporations; IRS, About Form 2553). It also adds payroll filings, a separate business return and, in Nevada, possible Modified Business Tax filings once you have employees (Nevada Department of Taxation). We review whether it fits before you file anything. See S-corp tax preparation in Las Vegas.

Common Las Vegas self-employed clients

Las Vegas has a large self-employed workforce: convention and trade-show contractors, event photographers and DJs, hair stylists and nail techs who rent a booth, personal trainers, handymen, cleaners, online sellers, consultants, rideshare drivers and real estate agents. Each has different deductions. A booth renter deducts chair rent and supplies, a photographer deducts camera gear and editing software, and a trade-show contractor may deduct travel between venues. Trucking, rideshare and real estate are among the industries we work with most; see rideshare and gig driver taxes, contractor tax preparation and realtor tax preparation.

Keeping it simple next year

Open a separate business bank account, pay business expenses from it, keep receipts in a phone folder and use a mileage app. At year end, a simple profit and loss summary makes your return faster to prepare and easier to support if the IRS ever asks. iQTAXX is open year-round, not seasonal, so you can call about estimates, IRS letters or a new business in July as easily as in March.

Frequently asked questions

How much does self-employed tax preparation in Las Vegas cost?

Our fees depend on the forms your return needs. Call 702-871-7884 for a quote.

What is self-employment tax?

Self-employment tax is 15.3% of most net self-employment earnings, covering Social Security and Medicare. It is in addition to income tax, applies when net earnings are $400 or more, and half of it is deductible.

Do I have to report income if I did not get a 1099?

Yes. All business income is taxable whether or not you receive a 1099. For payments made in 2026, the 1099-NEC threshold is $2,000, but income below that is still reportable.

Can I deduct my car if I am self-employed?

Yes, for business miles. You can use the IRS standard mileage rate (72.5 cents a mile January to June 2026 and 76 cents from July 1) or actual expenses. Commuting is not deductible, and you need a mileage log.

Do I need to pay quarterly estimated taxes?

Usually, if you expect to owe $1,000 or more. Payments are due April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15. We can work out the amounts with you.

Do self-employed people in Nevada pay state income tax?

No. Nevada has no personal income tax, so a Las Vegas sole proprietor files only a federal income tax return, plus federal self-employment tax. A Nevada state business license may still be required.

Should I become an S-corp?

It depends on steady profit, payroll costs and the extra business return. We can review whether it fits before you make the election.

How can married couples filing jointly save on taxes when one spouse is self-employed?

Common steps are filing jointly for the larger standard deduction, raising the W-2 spouse's withholding to cover business income, retirement contributions for both spouses, and the qualified joint venture election if both spouses run the business. Results depend on your numbers.
