Quick answer Las Vegas casino and hospitality workers, including dealers, cocktail servers, bartenders, bellpersons, valets, slot attendants and cage cashiers, can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips a year for tax years 2025 through 2028 on Schedule 1-A, whether they itemize or not, as long as the tips are reported on a W-2, 1099 or Form 4137 and their occupation is on the IRS tipped-occupations list. Tips are still subject to Social Security and Medicare tax, and Nevada has no state income tax. Our fees depend on the forms your return needs. Call 702-871-7884 for a quote.

Key facts (checked October 29, 2026)

Who this guide is for

Dealers on the Strip and downtown, cocktail servers, bartenders and barbacks, bellpersons and valets, slot attendants and change persons, cage cashiers, room service and banquet servers, front-desk clerks and housekeepers. If you work in a casino, hotel or restaurant in Las Vegas and part of your pay comes from guests, the 2025 tax rules changed your return. iQTAXX prepares these returns at our office on S Rainbow Blvd in Spring Valley, year-round.

What counts as a qualified tip

Under the IRS guidance, qualified tips are cash or charge tips paid voluntarily, in an amount the customer decides, in an occupation that customarily received tips on or before December 31, 2024 (IRS Notice 2025-69). They must show up on a W-2, a 1099 or another statement, or you must report them yourself on Form 4137 (IRS, Schedule 1-A).

Tips deduction vs. overtime deduction

Sources: IRS, Schedule 1-A: what to know, 2025 Schedule 1-A and IRS Notice 2025-69. The deduction lowers federal income tax only. It doesn't change Social Security and Medicare tax on your tips, and those taxes still count toward your Social Security record.

Reporting tips to your employer

The IRS rules from Publication 531 (Rev. 12/2024):

Good records matter more now, because only tips that are reported on a statement or on Form 4137 can count toward the deduction. See also the IRS tip recordkeeping and reporting page and Tax Topic 761, Tips.

Reading a casino or hotel W-2

For 2025, IRS Notice 2025-69 gave transition relief because many employers weren't yet reporting qualified tips and overtime separately, and it explains how workers can figure the amounts from what they do have (IRS Notice 2025-69). Bring your last pay stub of the year so we can match the numbers.

Overtime during conventions, fights and holidays

Convention weeks, holiday weekends and fight nights mean overtime for many hotel and casino employees. Only the premium portion of FLSA-required overtime counts, meaning the extra half in time-and-a-half, not the whole overtime check. The limit is $12,500 ($25,000 joint), with the same $150,000/$300,000 phase-out (IRS). If your W-2 doesn't separate it, bring your pay stubs.

Union dues, uniforms and shoes

For most employees, unreimbursed work expenses such as union dues, uniforms and work shoes aren't deductible on the federal return. We tell you plainly what does and doesn't count, so you don't claim something that brings an IRS letter later. If you got a letter about tips or allocated tips, see IRS notice help in Las Vegas.

Gambling on your day off

Many hospitality workers also play. All gambling winnings are taxable, with or without a W-2G (IRS Tax Topic 419). For payments made in 2026, the W-2G threshold for slots, bingo and keno is $2,000 (IRS Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754). Gambling losses are deductible only if you itemize, and starting with tax year 2026 they're limited to 90% of losses and never more than winnings. Details: gambling winnings and W-2G tax help.

Worked examples

Example numbers only, not clients and not predicted results.

Cocktail server, single. $32,000 in wages and $18,000 in tips reported to the employer and shown in W-2 box 7. MAGI is about $50,000, well under $150,000, and $18,000 is under the $25,000 cap, so the tips deduction on Schedule 1-A can be up to $18,000. Social Security and Medicare tax on the $18,000 doesn't change. Our fees depend on the forms your return needs. Call 702-871-7884 for a quote.

Dealer, single. $35,000 in hourly wages and $45,000 in toke distributions. The deduction is capped at $25,000, even though tips are $45,000.

Higher earner, single. Qualified tips of $30,000 and MAGI of $160,000. The $25,000 cap applies first; MAGI is $10,000 over $150,000, so the deduction drops by 10 × $100 = $1,000, to $24,000 (2025 Schedule 1-A).

Frequently asked questions

How much is the no tax on tips deduction?

Up to $25,000 of qualified tips per return per year, for tax years 2025 through 2028. It phases out for modified adjusted gross income over $150,000, or $300,000 for married couples filing jointly, and you claim it on Schedule 1-A whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.

Do casino dealer tokes count for no tax on tips?

Generally yes. Gambling dealers are on the IRS list of occupations that customarily received tips, and the toke distributions you receive and keep from the pool are tips, as long as they are reported on your W-2 or on Form 4137.

Do I still pay Social Security and Medicare tax on my tips?

Yes. The tips deduction lowers federal income tax only. Social Security and Medicare tax still apply to your tips, and those tips still count toward your Social Security record.

Do mandatory service charges count as tips?

No. If the customer can't choose the amount, such as an automatic 18% charge on a large party, it is a service charge. Service charges paid to you are wages, not tips, and don't qualify for the tips deduction.

What does box 8 allocated tips on my W-2 mean?

Allocated tips are tips your employer assigned to you because reported tips were less than 8% of food and drink sales. They aren't included in box 1 and no tax was withheld on them, so you add them to income unless your records show you received less.

Is overtime tax free for casino workers in Las Vegas?

Not entirely. Only the premium part of FLSA-required overtime, the extra half in time-and-a-half, may be deducted, up to $12,500 or $25,000 for joint filers, for 2025 through 2028. Regular pay and Social Security and Medicare tax still apply, and Nevada has no state income tax.

How do I report my tips to my employer?

Keep a daily tip record and report cash and charge tips of $20 or more in a month to your employer by the 10th of the next month, using your employer's system. The old IRS Form 4070 is now historical; tips you didn't report go on Form 4137 with your return.
